Jefferson Federation of Teachers (JFT) seeks a full-time organizer to join our team. JFT is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, serving teachers and school support staff in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.
Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. Union organizing experience preferred.
Qualifications:
- Dedicated to social and economic justice, and public education.
- Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles.
- Basic knowledge of labor laws, especially with respect to union organizing.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
- Ability to use social media platforms to build campaign reach and capacity.
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours.
- Ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
- Experience working in labor, community, student activism or K-12 education.
- Valid driver’s license and automobile in good working order.
- Driving, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are required.
Summary of duties and responsibilities:
- Organize and mobilize workers
- Attend meetings with team members, supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
- One-on-one visits, site visits, in person meetings, phone calls, video meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
- Work with groups of workers on dedicated outcomes and benchmarks
- Ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people, as well as an understanding of the daily challenges faced by workers employed in Louisiana K-12 Public Schools
- Utilize online tools to support campaigns and communication
Compensation: Starting salary for this position is $41,000. In addition to base salary, JFT offers a wide range of benefits including health/dental/vision as well as retirement contributions and cell phone reimbursement.
