A bill that had raised hackles in the special education community because it could have segregated specialneeds children into separate schools will apparently not be moved by its author.
HB 642 by Rep. Nancy Landry (R-Lafayette) would have authorized the creation of “regional special educationschools” in each of the state’s eight educational regions.The schools would have been established as non-profit corporations and approved by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education as nonpublic schools. Tuition at the schools would have been paid by state vouchers.
After hearing massive opposition from special education parents and advocates, Landry announced that she willnot move the bill.
